Unemployment figures in Meriden

Latest jobs figures shows the Government is letting Meriden down
In the Meriden constituency long term unemployment is still unacceptably high. As at April 2014, 755 people, and 160 young people, have been out of work for a year or more. This government is still letting down your area. When I speak to people on the doorstep unemployment is, unsurprisingly, a huge issue.

We urgently need action to get local people into work. This is why Labour is calling for a compulsory jobs guarantee, which will get any adult out of work for more than two years, or young person out of work for a year, into a job – one they would be required to take.

This makes economic sense. The money to pay for this scheme is not wasted - it will save on merely paying benefits instead, gives unemployed people long term job prospects and opportunities, and will increase tax revenues. Further, this will also be paid for by taxing bankers’ bonuses so that we can see a fairer distribution in society.

Meriden should not have to wait any longer for action. Ministers must get off their hands and start helping now before they condemn a whole generation to joblessness.
