Visit to Solihull Carers Centre

On 31 January 2014, I visited Solihull Carers Centre. I was so impressed I wanted to write to the Solihull News and Solihull Observer to emphasise what a great organisation it is and how we must make it clear that many carers of all ages in Solihull face serious hardship when looking after other people. Whether it is a young child looking after sick relatives, carers with disabilities, young adults unable to work due to their caring obligations, or older adults with similar problems.

In particular, I was very impressed with the holistic approach they take to supporting carers. From what I could see, this is done with great compassion and enthusiasm and a genuine desire to improve lives. Services include helping carers access necessary respite, supporting the social, emotional, educational or occupational needs of carers or assisting with carer safety and physical well being.

These services provide a huge social and economic benefit by helping avoid expensive problems down the line, such as the need for hospital treatment or negative consequences for cares psychologically and physiologically. The extensive work they do really highlights the need for this vital service for carers in Solihull; a need in the local community that is often not greatly discussed or known about.
