Last weekend, with the help of Nigel Knowles the Parliamentary Candidate for Solihull, I held the first Solihull & Meriden Young Labour meeting.
We had excellent conversations about:
- tuition fees (including discussion surrounding: the idea of a graduate tax; the risk that people from poorer backgrounds will be put off university due to massive debts; whether a university education is right for everybody or not; the role university should play with practical skills; how businesses should contribute to universities; and the fact that increased fees under the Tories and Lib Dems may actually costs the country more because students cannot pay off their £40k+ debt in their lifetime);
- the need for high quality apprenticeships;
- the significant need for more housing;
- the importance of the living wage and fair working conditions; and
- a number of other key political topics.
